Head Coach Positions (Women's Basketball and Softball)
Grade 12
Bargaining Unit: VSCUP-PAT
FLSA: Exempt
Basic Function
VTSU Castleton has two Head Coach openings; Women's Basketball and Softball.
The head coaches will be in charge of all aspects of their programs, including recruitment of quality student athletes, retention, fundraising, conditioning programs, organizing and planning practices and game strategies, and assisting in scheduling contests and coordinating travel.
Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities
- The coach will manage the daily operations of a Division III intercollegiate program under the guidelines established by Vermont State University, NCAA and Little East Conference.
- Responsibilities include, but not limited to, practice and game preparation, the supervision of the assistant coaching staff, recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes, overseeing the academic success and student-athlete welfare.
- Assist in game management for various athletic events and contests.
- Perform other administrative duties within the Athletics and Recreation Department as assigned.
Supervision Received
General supervision is received from the Director of Athletics.
Supervision Exercised
General supervision over assistant coaches, graduate assistants, student workers and student interns.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in sports administration, recreation, physical education, or other appropriate discipline with a master’s degree desirable, plus two to four years relevant experience in coaching, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Strong and varied technical skills and interest in recreational activities.
- Broad base of knowledge and skills related to fitness center, pool and athletic facilities, management, coaching, recruiting and other relevant experience.
- Two to four years of prior coaching experience.
- Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of University students, personnel, as well as media contacts, facilities users and others outside the University.
- Weekend and evening work is required.
- Valid Vermont State Driver’s License
Knowledge
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
- Ability to deal effectively with students, college personnel, as well as professional NCAA compliance network and others outside of the university.
- Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
- Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.
Skills

Location: Vermont State University Castleton campus.
COMPENSATION: The budgeted compensation for the Head Coach of Women's Basketball is $58k-$62k. The budgeted compensation of the Head Coach for Softball is $55k-$60k.
