Vermont Farm Table is currently seeking a Sanding Lead to join our tight knit team of woodworkers. Experience is preferred, however with qualifying skills and a desire to learn VFT will train for longterm success.
VFT crafts custom solid wood tables and furniture in Bristol, VT using sustainably sourced eastern hardwoods. All of our pieces are made-to-order with the highest level of quality and attention to detail.
In the role of Sanding Lead, you will be responsible for processing panels through the wide belt sander to prepare them for CNC processing. Responsibilities include finish sanding panels, base components, and other wood products; as well as repairing wood by filling knots using epoxy, fill sticks, and other materials. You will be responsible for verifying product specs against production cards prior to all processing steps to ensure quality and accurate production. Attention to detail is essential, and you will work closely with the CNC operator to set daily work flow, and the Finishing department to ensure all products are sanded to suit specified stains and finishes.
The Finishing Lead reports directly to the Wood Shop Foreman, and works with them closely on a daily basis. As with every role within VFT, flexibility is key; you may be asked to work across departments within the production process as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned
- Sand solid wood tabletops and components using hand tools and industrial woodworking equipment.
- Safely operate woodworking machinery including wide belt sanders, hand-held orbital sanders, belt sanders, block sanders, and cutting tools.
- Verify dimensions using calipers and tape measures.
- Conduct quality control assessments at the sanding stage, checking that wood is free of warping, cracking, or swelling.
- Repair wood defects by filling knots using epoxy, fill sticks, and other appropriate materials.
- Move materials and tabletops between departments as required.
- Manage and maintain dust collection systems and perform other disposal duties as needed.
- Monitor sanding supply inventory levels and submit purchasing requests as necessary
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail
- Strong time management and multitasking skills
- Knowledge of solid wood process is preferred but not required
- Ability to read shop drawings
- Ability to lift up to 100lbs
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- $21.00/hr starting pay, or based on experience
