Highway Equipment Operator 1
FLSA Designation: Non-exempt Full-time Pay Classification: Grade 2
Department: Public Works
Nature and Scope of Position
To operate a variety of vehicles and highway equipment, which involves plowing, salting and sanding roads in winter, and assisting in general highway maintenance and construction work in other seasons, with a focus on operation of basic to moderately complex trucks and equipment, as well as manual labor.
Supervision Received
Direct to moderate supervision is received from the Highway Foreman, Highway Operator 2, or other senior staff member.
Supervision Given
The Highway Operator I will not have any supervisory duties.
Essential Job Functions
The following is a list of the more common duties and responsibilities attributable to the position. This list is not all-inclusive and may be amended from time to time as circumstances may dictate:
· Maintain town roads, sidewalks and parking lots in winter: plow and push back snowbanks; remove snow using trucks and equipment; salt and sand roads and sidewalks.
· Perform/assist with a wide variety of spring, summer and fall highway maintenance and construction work including:
· Spread gravel, fill potholes, spread calcium chloride
· Clean and repair culverts and catch basins
· Put up and replace road signs
· Put up and take down snow fences
· Cut and clear trees and brush
· Repair and replace guardrails
· Haul asphalt for paving and other road construction materials and equipment
· Load and unload vehicles, using power equipment, if necessary
· Transport work crews to and from worksites
· Collect and dispose of refuse
· Provide traffic control measures to include flagging.
· Assist in routine maintenance and repair of hand tools, small power tools and highway vehicles
Requirements of Work
· Ability to operate vehicles and equipment
· Good basic mechanical skills
· Ability to do physical labor to include but limited to loading and unloading of vehicles and equipment from trailers, use of various hand tools (shovels, breaker bars, jack hammer, power tools, etc.).
· Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
· Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 4 hours)
· Reach at or above shoulder height.
· Bend, twist, crawl, squat, kneel, crouch, climb and balance.
· Ability to see and hear, naturally or with aides.
· Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
· The employee maintains a safe work environment and is responsible for wearing and maintaining personal protective equipment.
Required Training, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· High School graduate or GED
· Must possess or be able to obtain a minimum Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tank Endorsement within 1-year of accepting the position.
· One to three years of relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills acquired
· Must be a team player and a self-motivated person who can work independently as necessary.
· Ability to assist individuals in an efficient and courteous manner.
