Job Overview
The Town of Hartford, Vermont is seeking a qualified, experienced candidate for the position of Wastewater Assistant Chief Operatorfor theQuechee sewage treatment plant, community sanitary systems, and sanitary distribution system.
Minimum qualifications include; Current Vermont Grade 3DM Wastewater Certification; high school diploma and 5-7 years of relevant experience or a equivalent combination of education and experience; supervising a staff of 1-3 operators; valid driver’s license. Ability to operate and repair equipment; and be a team player who is self-motivated.
This is a full-time position where pay is commensurate with experience, ranging from $27.59 to $34.83 per hour. Benefits include VMERS retirement plan; health, dental, and life insurance; and 14 paid holidays.

Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, supervision, inspection, and coordination of all daily operations of the wastewater system.
- Ensures compliance with Federal and State of Vermont statues, rules, and regulations.
- Assist Chief Wastewater Operator with the planning and administration of the operating budget.
- Supervise 1-3 employees; oversee daily work assignments; monitor work in progress and check completed work; assist staff with difficult or unusual tasks; resolve problems; refer unusual personnel problems to Chief Wastewater Operator.
- Supervise/perform the inspection, testing, regular maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and repair of plant equipment, including; pumps, motors, valves, and gauges, as well as pumping stations and related mechanical equipment.
- Take readings from charts and gauges, control flow valves and perform similar operations.
- Supervise/perform the collection and lab analysis of samples.
- Assist with the preparation of written records and reports related to plant operations.
- Ensure monthly maintenance schedules for pumps, motors and blowers are completed
Skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to repair and maintain complex equipment
- Proficiency in operating heavy machinery and performing heavy lifting safely
- Knowledge of water treatment processes, including biological, chemical, and physical methods
- Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS) for process automation
- Ability to perform basic math calculations accurately for data analysis and process adjustments
- Excellent analysis skills to troubleshoot issues quickly and implement effective solutions
- Skilled in plumbing repairs, equipment maintenance, and general construction tasks
- Capable of collecting reliable data for reporting purposes while maintaining attention to detail
