About the Role
Seeking an experienced General Maintenance Worker to support the operation and mechanical maintenance of a federal facility in Rutland, Vermont.
This position is responsible for performing a broad range of general maintenance, repair, and building upkeep tasks. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience across multiple maintenance trades, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, and general mechanical maintenance.
Experience with commercial HVAC systems and mechanical building systems is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of building systems, equipment, and facilities.
- Replace electrical receptacles, wiring, switches, fixtures, and motors.
- Perform minor electrical troubleshooting and repairs within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
- Repair and patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings using plaster, compound, or similar materials.
- Repair or replace sinks, water coolers, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures.
- Perform basic plumbing maintenance and repairs.
- Paint floors, steps, sidewalks, walls, and other facility surfaces as needed.
- Replace damaged wall paneling and floor tiles.
- Hang and adjust doors and install or replace locks and related hardware.
- Replace broken window panes and perform related building repairs.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on facility equipment and machinery.
- Conduct preventive maintenance (PM) and routine service calls as assigned.
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of commercial HVAC and mechanical building systems.
- Identify maintenance issues and determine appropriate repair or corrective actions.
- Follow established safety procedures, facility requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.
- Complete other general facility maintenance duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in general maintenance and repair.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Practical knowledge and hands-on skills in multiple maintenance trades, such as:
- Electrical
- Plumbing
- Carpentry
- Painting
- Masonry
- General mechanical maintenance
- Ability to perform general building repairs and maintenance independently.
- Ability to troubleshoot maintenance issues and determine appropriate solutions.
- Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively in a professional facility environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing commercial HVAC repair and maintenance.
- Experience maintaining commercial mechanical building systems.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance (PM) on facility equipment.
- Experience responding to routine maintenance/service calls.
- Experience working in commercial, government, institutional, or federal facilities.
- Experience working in a unionized maintenance environment is a plus.
