Help create meaningful, engaging experiences for older adults in our community. Essex Junction Recreation & Parks is seeking a Program Director with a focus on programs and services for older adults. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about enriching the lives of older adults through recreation, social connection, wellness, and lifelong learning opportunities.
What You’ll Do
You’ll lead the development, coordination, and growth of recreation programs and events, with a primary focus on serving older adults while supporting broader department initiatives.
Pay/Wages The pay rate is between $56,083 to $61,000 based on experience.

Program & Event Leadership (Older Adult Focus)
- Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate programs, activities, and special events designed for older adults
- Develop new programs that support wellness, social connection, creativity, and lifelong learning
- Stay current on trends and best practices in older adult recreation and aging services
- Oversee program logistics, scheduling, and on-site supervision (including evenings or occasional weekends)
- Build strong relationships with participants and create a welcoming, inclusive environment
- Serve as a liaison with community organizations, senior services providers, and partners
Community Engagement & Outreach
- Connect with the community to understand the needs and interests of older adults
- Promote programs and encourage participation across diverse groups
- Represent EJRP at community events and actively advocate for the value of recreation in healthy aging
- Recruit, support, and recognize volunteers to enhance programs
Operations, Budget & Administration
- Monitor program budgets, expenses, and revenues
- Maintain accurate program records using recreation software and other systems
- Assist with budget planning and prepare reports as needed
- Research and apply for grants related to older adult programming
- Ensure supplies and equipment are safe, well-maintained, and available
Staff & Volunteer Supervision
- Hire, train, and supervise staff assigned to programs
- Support program coordinators and assist with staffing needs
- Oversee volunteer recruitment and engagement
Facilities & Program Support
- Coordinate with facilities staff to ensure spaces are prepared for programs and events
- Assist with program setup and breakdown as needed
- Identify facility or equipment needs to support safe and accessible programming
Marketing & Communication
- Promote programs through social media, print materials, community outreach, and partnerships
- Help maintain a user-friendly website and registration system
- Contribute to seasonal brochures and marketing campaigns
- Develop creative strategies to increase participation among older adults

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Human Services, or a related field
- At least two (2) years of experience in recreation programming, preferably including work with older adults, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience planning and leading programs or events
- Knowledge of community recreation principles and best practices
Additional Requirements
- CPRP certification preferred (or ability to obtain within one year)
- First Aid and CPR certification required
- Valid driver’s license (as applicable)
Schedule & Work Environment
- Flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekends
- Occasional travel for meetings, trainings, and conferences
