Summary
Middlebury Regional EMS (MREMS) is a vital part of our community, dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents through prompt, professional emergency response and community healthcare services. We are seeking a full-time Emergency Dispatcher to join our communications team.
Dispatchers are critical members of our organization who coordinate emergency response operations, facilitate communication among agencies, and support after-hours medical answering services. Essential Duties- Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Dispatch fire, EMS, and other emergency personnel quickly and accurately.
- Make sound decisions under pressure, prioritizing calls based on urgency and available resources.
- Maintain clear, calm, and professional communication with responders, citizens, and partner agencies.
- Record detailed and accurate call information, including caller details, incident descriptions, and actions taken, in accordance with protocols.
- Utilize CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch), mapping software, radio systems, and other technologies to coordinate responses efficiently.
- Provide after-hours answering services for multiple medical offices, collecting patient information and paging the appropriate on-call provider.
Qualifications- No prior dispatch experience required — full training provided.
- Strong multitasking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful or high-stakes situations.
- Proficiency with computers and multi-line phone systems.
- Familiarity with emergency dispatch software, radio systems, or local geography is a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- EMS of Fire background preferred but not necessary
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
Schedule- Full-time position; 12-hour day and evening shifts.
- Rotating weekends and holidays required.
- Overtime may be required during high call volume or special events.
Physical Demands- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a computer, telephone, and radio system.
- Must have unimpaired hearing and vision, with or without corrective devices.
- Ability to maintain focus and accuracy during long shifts and emergency situations.
Work Environment- Fast-paced, high-stakes communication center environment.
- Frequent exposure to stressful or emotional situations related to emergency calls.
- Team-based environment with constant interaction with responders and the public.
